Verel takes part in the GA 2026 scientific congress in Reims, presenting three studies that qualify agri-food waste as cosmetic actives

From August 30th to September 2nd, Verel will be in Reims to present a proprietary skincare active with clinical study results, along with four haircare extracts in collaboration with Davines Group. Schedule a meeting at the congress.

From August 30 to September 2, Verel will be at the Reims Convention Centre for the 74th International Congress of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA 2026). All three studies share a common starting point: biomass that the agri-food industry treats as waste, which Verel transforms into functional raw material.

Proprietary skincare active derived from the floral biomass of Crocus sativus L.
Chiara Spaggiari, R&D Scientist at Verel, will walk through the entire development of the ingredient: chemical characterization, in vitro antioxidant evaluation, cell viability assays on human fibroblasts, and a placebo-controlled clinical study on 30 volunteers. The in vitro testing was made possible through a collaboration with the Department of Food and Drug Sciences at the University of Parma, a scientific partner of Verel.

Bitter orange peels, clementine processing residues, and apricot by-products from Regenerative Organic certified agricultural supply chains, transformed into cosmetic ingredients for premium haircare formulations.

Characterization of flowers, leaves, and aerial parts of Trifolium pratense to identify the plant fraction best suited for developing haircare ingredients that support scalp longevity.

Tracing the supply chain: from raw material to finished product 

Verel manages the entire chain that brings agricultural raw material into a finished product. Biomass selection, extraction, analytical characterization, in vitro study, clinical validation, formula development, industrialization, and production: these are steps that, in most cosmetic projects, are handled by four or five different suppliers.

The engine of this chain is our research and development laboratory. Five hundred square meters where the proprietary actives that go into our clients' formulas are studied, developed, and produced. SAFFROSENSE™ was born there, just like the other functional actives in our catalog: each one reaches the market with its own dossier, from the extraction method to efficacy data.

For a brand, the difference is tangible. An off-the-shelf ingredient is also available to competitors developing their own lines. An active built from the ground up, based on a selected supply chain and with project-specific data, remains an advantage for the company that commissioned it.

Verel is bringing the results of this work to Reims. The GA congress brings together the international scientific community dedicated to the study of medicinal plants and natural products: abstracts are peer-reviewed, and methods and protocols are discussed before results are presented. It is the place where a company's research is evaluated by those who truly understand it.
